Most events in the California suburbs are oriented around commerce, product consumption, socializing, or marketplaces. These types of events are needed for the local region and certainly to support local businesses. That said, we believe that there is a hunger and lots of room for different kind of experiences.
We have heard from friends and colleagues for years about the lack of creative support and opportunities outside our beloved largest cities. Not only that, we have first-hand experience with it ourselves as working creative professionals.
Open Curriculum is JOY128โs first slate of creative programming that focuses on peer-driven creative learning and co-creation.

Open Curriculum is made up of four session types.
Each one serving a different need. You don't have to come to all of them. But the more consistently you show up, the more they work together:
๐ Working Drafts are open creative co-working sessions. We're planning to host them twice a month and they will be designed with various motifs and inspirations throughout the year.
๐ General Electives are monthly hands-on workshops that cross disciplines โ a skill, a tool, or a practice you probably wouldn't encounter inside your own creative lane. These sessions are designed to create fun collisions on purpose.
๐ก Monthly Crits are facilitated feedback sessions where you bring something you're working on and get a real response from a group that's been in the room with you long enough to actually know your projects.
โจ Special Occasions are everything else โ social gatherings, intensives, field trips, focused builds, guest conversations. These are where the community breathes a little and the relationships built in the working sessions get room to develop into friendships.
